Go to any health-conscious website and they’ll likely sing the praises of protein. But have you ever wondered why? What’s so special about protein anyway? What does protein do?

Protein is a vital component of healthy living. Essential for hair and nails, skin and bones, and energy, protein breaks down into essential nutrients called amino acids that build, fuel, and repair cells. The functions of protein in the body are plentiful. Foods high in protein help curb hunger and promote weight maintenance, fire up the immune system, and keep you energized whether you’re on your bike, hiking the trails, or need to stay fueled for a busy work day.

Are You Getting Enough Protein?

Does protein give you energy? You bet it does. Unfortunately, experts from Harvard Medical School found that most of us aren’t getting enough of it. To determine whether or not you’re getting a sufficient amount of protein, you need to calculate your RDA for protein (Recommended Daily Allowance). Do this by multiplying your weight in pounds by 0.36. This will tell you how many grams of protein you need per day.

How Do I Increase My Protein Intake in a Healthy Way?

There are many ways to boost the amount of protein in your diet, but it’s important to do it the right way with healthy and nutritious foods. Why increase your protein intake? Eating high protein foods may help maintain muscle strength while aging, help with body composition, and give you sustained energy that will last you all day long.

There are many sources of protein, including plant-based protein from pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and nuts like almonds, peanuts, and macadamias. Check out this recipe for an Acai Almond Butter Smoothiebowl (courtesy of our friend @ducklet1) for a tasty way to sneak a high protein snack into your day.
